You Can’t Live the Right Live with the Wrong People

Our standards quietly rise or fall based on what we normalize in our closest circles.

We truly do become the average of the five people we spend the most time with. If the people around you complain more than they create, or fear change more than they pursue growth, or make excuses instead of taking responsibility… that way of thinking slowly becomes familiar—and then acceptable. Over time, it doesn’t feel like compromise; it just feels like life…and that’s what’s so dangerous. It’s subtle but with a huge cumulative effect.  Conversely, when you’re around people who are curious, disciplined, optimistic, and honest with themselves, those traits begin to feel normal too. The bar quietly moves.

It’s about alignment. Some relationships belong to earlier versions of us, and honoring growth sometimes means honoring distance. You can love people and still choose not to build your future alongside their habits, beliefs, or limitations. Growth requires environment just as much as effort—and no amount of personal discipline can consistently overcome the gravity of the wrong people or wrong surroundings.

As this week begins, take a moment to reflect on who you’re learning from, leaning on, and becoming like—whether intentionally or not. Ask yourself if your inner circle challenges you to be better or comforts you into staying the same. The right people don’t just support your goals; they should reinforce the standards you believe in.

It’s pretty simple – choose who you spend time with wisely.  You can’t live your right life with the wrong people.
