The Right Philosophy

Optimism is a requirement for advisors…for both themselves and their clients.

Just like the famous instructions before each flight – an advisor must put their facemasks on first, before they can help others. Having the right mindest is paramount. Why? Because clients don’t borrow our certainty when times are easy. They borrow it when times are uncomfortable.

Anyone who has sat in front of a client knows that… clients might not always remember what we said, but they will always remember how we made them feel. Any good coach and leader knows his troops will take on his or her persona. Optimism and the right philosophy is essential.

What we think about grows.
Whatever we allow to occupy our minds eventually occupies our lives — and our businesses. We can’t always control the thoughts that show up. Doubt, fear, frustration… they’re part of the job. They’re part of life. But we can always control what we do with them.

Which ones we feed.
Which ones we act on.
Which ones we let pass.

And if you don’t believe in markets, it’s nearly impossible to help clients stay invested when belief is hardest. And if you don’t believe progress compounds over time, short-term noise will always start to feel like truth…you’ll always pursue pleasure over long term success. Having the right philosophy for investing is as equally as important as it is for life. Our philsophy drives our attitude, our attitude drives our actions, and our actions dictate our results.

Positive thinking isn’t about ignoring reality…it’s about choosing long-term truth over short-term emotion — for ourselves first, and then for the people who trust us. Everything starts with the right philosophy.

Make it a great day.
